No time to cook? With a few smart shortcuts you can have these Chilli Prawn Noodles on the table in five minutes. This is one of my favourite prawn recipes and it’s Slimming World friendly too.

I don’t usually rely on shortcuts, but I did accept a challenge recently: can a tasty meal be ready in just five minutes? The answer is yes — if you use a few clever time-savers. For this quick meal I chose Chilli Prawn Noodles, inspired by a favourite takeaway. The version here is simplified but still full of flavour: garlicky, slightly spicy and filling — perfect when you’re short on time.

If you want to watch the method, there’s a short video showing how I make it — ignore the noisy kids in the background; telling children to be quiet tends to have the opposite effect!
How to make prawn stir fry noodles
Full measurements and printable instructions are in the recipe card below. Read the steps and watch the video before you start.
STEP 1. Heat 1–2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a wok. When hot, add frozen chopped onion, garlic, chilli and grated ginger. Stir-fry continuously for about a minute until fragrant. For a Slimming World version use low-calorie cooking spray.
STEP 2. Add the raw prawns and stir in the ketchup (or hot chilli sauce) and sugar (or sweetener). Pour in the soy sauce and add the cherry tomatoes, breaking them up with your spoon. Cook for around 3 minutes, stirring so the sauce coats everything.
STEP 3. When the prawns are mostly pink, add straight-to-wok noodles and toss them in the sauce. Stir for another minute, or until the prawns are completely cooked through. Serve with fresh basil (Thai basil if you have it) and a grind of black pepper.
Chilli Prawn Noodles – tips and tricks
- To keep total cook time to five minutes, use frozen chopped onions, garlic, ginger and chilli. You can also use garlic, chilli and ginger paste from a tube.
- Canned cherry tomatoes in juice work well for speed and convenience, but halved fresh cherry tomatoes are a good alternative.
- Raw prawns cook very quickly; pre-cooked prawns can be used to make the dish even faster.
- Use straight-to-wok egg noodles for the quickest finish. Udon also works. For Slimming World, dried free noodles or courgetti are good swaps.
Slimming World variation
For a nearly Syn-free Slimming World version use a low-calorie cooking spray, dried free noodles and a sweetener instead of sugar. A tablespoon of reduced-sugar ketchup or hot chilli sauce is minimal (around 0.5 Syns).
To make this Extra Easy SP friendly, replace the noodles with courgetti (zucchini noodles). Stir the courgette noodles through after cooking so they warm in the sauce and retain some texture. One large courgette will usually serve two people, but add more if you like. Many supermarkets now sell pre-spiralled vegetable noodles and cauliflower rice if you prefer.
