Yes, it’s January and here I am sharing a smoothie, but this one has been a regular in my rotation since fall. When I want something chocolatey in the morning that still feels nourishing, this smoothie wins. It’s richer than a typical fruit smoothie thanks to oats and cocoa powder, yet still light enough to drink on the way out the door.

I alternate this with my favorite green smoothie depending on the mood, but when the craving for chocolate hits, this is the breakfast I reach for.

Three spoons with oats, cocoa powder and hemp seeds, and two glasses of Chocolate Cherry Smoothie.

About This Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

Chocolate and cherries are a classic pairing for a reason: the tart sweetness of cherries pairs beautifully with the deep flavor of cocoa. This smoothie blends frozen sweet cherries with rolled oats for texture and staying power, unsweetened vanilla almond milk for creaminess, and unsweetened cocoa powder for that unmistakable chocolate taste.

Optional add-ins like hulled hemp seeds or chia seeds boost the smoothie’s protein and healthy-fat content. A touch of maple syrup or honey balances the tartness, and a dash of vanilla enhances the overall flavor profile. Despite tasting indulgent, this drink provides fiber and nutrients that make it a dependable on-the-go breakfast.

Serve it right away for the best texture. If you use chia seeds, plan to drink it soon after blending since the mixture thickens as it sits.

Chocolate Cherry Oat Smoothie

Yield:
1 large smoothie

This chocolate cherry oat smoothie makes a satisfying, nutrient-packed breakfast. Rolled oats add fiber and texture, frozen cherries provide natural sweetness and antioxidants, and unsweetened almond milk keeps the drink light and dairy-free. Sweeten with maple syrup to keep it vegan, or use honey if you prefer.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup frozen cherries
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 heaping tablespoon unsweetened dutch process cocoa powder*
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or honey**
  • splash of vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon hulled hemp seeds or 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)***

Instructions

  1. Add the oats to a blender and process until they are finely ground, about 15 seconds.
  2. Add the frozen cherries, almond milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup (or honey), vanilla, and hemp or chia seeds if using. Blend until completely smooth and well combined.
  3. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Serve immediately for the best texture.

Notes

*Regular unsweetened cocoa powder works fine if you don’t have dutch-process; dutch-process gives a slightly deeper chocolate flavor.

**Use pure maple syrup to keep this smoothie vegan; honey is an alternative for non-vegan diets.

***If you choose chia seeds, drink the smoothie soon after blending. Chia seeds absorb liquid and will thicken the drink the longer it sits.
