Baked tacos on a plate

A friend recently told me about her daughter’s oven baked ground beef tacos, and after hearing her rave I decided to try my own version. This method is perfect when you want the taste of crispy tacos without deep-frying or standing over a hot skillet for long. I tested a few variations and settled on a straightforward approach that uses pantry staples and comes together quickly.

These tacos are ideal for busy evenings: the meat cooks fast, the shells crisp in the oven, and assembly takes just minutes. My family devoured them—some of us piled on toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and olives, while a couple of picky eaters preferred theirs plain. The flexibility makes this recipe great for feeding a crowd with different tastes.

How to Make Oven Baked Ground Beef Tacos

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (about 200°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef with the chopped onion until the meat is fully browned. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Add the taco seasoning, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Stir in the drained black beans and salsa, then simmer for about 5 minutes so the flavors meld.
  4. Arrange the hard taco shells standing up in a 9×13-inch baking pan. Bake the shells alone for 5 minutes to crisp them. Remove the pan from the oven and spoon a couple of scoops of the beef mixture into each shell, packing it down gently. Sprinkle shredded cheddar over each filled shell.
  5. Return the filled tacos to the oven and bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and everything is heated through.
  6. Serve immediately with a selection of toppings and let everyone customize their own tacos.

Simple, delicious, and perfect for weeknights.

Can You Use Other Meats?

Yes. While this version uses lean ground beef for its classic flavor, you can easily substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for a lighter option. Both alternatives respond well to the same seasoning and simmering step, giving you the same convenience and plenty of flavor.
