Homemade gifts show you took time for the person you’re making them for, and that makes them especially meaningful. With simple ingredients and inexpensive supplies like wooden teaspoons, cellophane and ribbon, you can create beautiful presents without spending a lot.

These hot chocolate sticks also work well as a special treat for guests or a cosy drink at home. They’re versatile: try a range of chocolate types and toppings to match preferences.

Are hot chocolate sticks expensive to make?

Not at all. You can use budget-friendly supermarket chocolate and still get delicious results. Keep in mind the chocolate you choose will be the main flavour, so pick one you — or your recipients — enjoy. Supplies like sticks, wrap and tags are inexpensive and widely available online.

What chocolate can I use?

Use any chocolate that melts well. Higher-cocoa chocolates usually yield a richer hot chocolate flavour, but use what you like and what fits your budget. There are also many vegan and gluten-free chocolate options now, so it’s easy to adapt.

What flavour combinations can I try?

There are so many fun combinations — here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • Galaxy chocolate with white chocolate stars
  • Dairy Milk topped with white chocolate buttons
  • Chocolate orange bars with mini segments
  • Melted Maltesers with a few in the topping
  • Mint Aero melted and chopped on top
  • Milk chocolate with peanut butter chips
  • Dark chocolate orange with marshmallows
  • Truffle-style chocolate (e.g. Lindt) with marshmallows
  • Kinder-style bars chopped and sprinkled on top

Topping ideas

Choose toppings that soften or melt into the chocolate for the best results. Try:

  • Milk or white chocolate buttons
  • Maltesers or similar chocolate-covered treats
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Small fudge pieces
  • Chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • Peanut butter chips
  • Chocolate sprinkles (jazzies)

Shelf life

Wrapped hot chocolate sticks will keep for 2–3 weeks. If you avoid marshmallows (which harden over time), they can last longer. For longer storage, stick to chocolate buttons, fudge or other stable toppings and store in a cool place.

How much chocolate per stick?

Plan on roughly 50g of chocolate per stick, plus any toppings.

Mould ideas

You can use silicone moulds, but inexpensive yoghurt pots (like small fromage frais pots) work just as well — and they’re recyclable. Clean them thoroughly before using.

Vegan and gluten-free options

Yes — easily. Many dark chocolates are accidentally vegan, and plenty of branded and supermarket vegan chocolates are affordable. Use vegan marshmallows or skip them and choose vegan-friendly toppings. Always check labels if you’re preparing gifts for people with allergies.

Tips for success

  • Lightly oil the yoghurt pots before filling — this makes unmoulding much easier.
  • Use the best chocolate you can afford for the best flavour.
  • Mix brands and chocolate types to create different sweetness and intensity.
  • White chocolate is sweetest, milk is moderately sweet, and dark gives a richer flavour.
  • Make them up to two weeks ahead for gifting.
  • Involve kids to make personalised tags — it makes the gift extra special.
  • Always check packaging for allergens if giving to someone with food sensitivities.
