Mixed Berry Cobbler Recipe

Very Berry Cobbler in a Lodge Dutch Oven, wood pellet grill dessert recipe, fresh berry cobbler

Very Berry Cobbler in a Lodge Dutch Oven

Very Berry Cobbler in a Lodge Dutch Oven is a warm, sweet, and simple outdoor dessert made with fresh raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. After a visit to the Murrieta Farmer’s Market, we came home with beautiful, juicy berries, along with plenty of fresh eggs and vegetables for other meals. Ken has always loved raspberry cobbler, so this version became an extra-special treat by combining three kinds of berries in one rich, bubbling dessert.

This wood pellet grill recipe brings together the natural sweetness of fresh berries, a touch of lemon, warm cinnamon, brown sugar, and a buttery biscuit-style topping. Cooking it in a Lodge Dutch oven on the grill gives the cobbler a rustic outdoor flavor, especially when finished with a light kiss of smoke from Mountain Maple pellets. It is the kind of dessert that feels homemade, comforting, and perfect for sharing.

Serve this berry cobbler warm with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. The soft fruit filling, golden topping, and gentle smoke make it tempting enough to eat dessert first.

Directions: Very Berry Cobbler

Place the fresh berries in a medium bowl. Add the lemon juice, lemon extract, and vanilla extract. Gently toss everything together so the berries are coated without being crushed. The goal is to keep the fruit as whole as possible while allowing the flavors to blend.

Lightly coat a small Lodge Dutch oven with cooking spray. Pour the berry mixture into the Dutch oven and spread it evenly across the bottom. In a separate small bowl, combine the biscuit baking mix, brown sugar, cinnamon, and small pieces of butter. Mix lightly until the ingredients are distributed. The butter will melt as the cobbler cooks, helping create a rich, tender topping over the fruit.

Spoon or sprinkle the topping mixture over the berries in the Dutch oven. Do not worry if the top is not perfectly even. A cobbler should look rustic, and the berries will bubble up around the topping as it cooks.

Preheat your wood pellet grill to 350 degrees F (178 degrees C). Once the grill is hot, place the Dutch oven directly on the grill grate. Let the cobbler cook for about 50 minutes, keeping the lid closed as much as possible to maintain steady heat.

Check the cobbler for doneness with a toothpick. Insert the toothpick into the topping and pull it out. When it comes out clean and the berry filling is hot and bubbling around the edges, the cobbler is ready. Remove the Dutch oven from the grill carefully, as it will be very hot. Allow the cobbler to rest for a few minutes before serving so the filling can settle slightly.

A quick note about pellets: a recipe is a guide, not a rulebook. Some recipes, especially bread and baking recipes, need closer measurements and more precise timing. Many outdoor cooking recipes, however, leave room for personal taste. Feel free to try different wood pellet flavors until you find a combination you enjoy. For this berry cobbler, Mountain Maple pellets add a mild, sweet smoke that works nicely with the fruit. Also remember that true smoking usually happens at temperatures below 250 degrees F. At higher temperatures, you are mostly cooking or baking, and the smoke flavor will be lighter.

Serving Suggestions

This Dutch oven berry cobbler is best served warm, soon after it comes off the grill. The filling will be soft, sweet, and slightly tart from the fresh berries and lemon, while the topping will have a buttery flavor with a gentle touch of cinnamon. Add whipped cream for a light finish, or serve it with vanilla bean ice cream for a classic hot-and-cold dessert combination.

If you prefer a stronger fruit flavor, use a berry mix with more raspberries or blackberries. If you like a sweeter cobbler, choose very ripe berries and serve with ice cream. The recipe is easy to adjust while still keeping the same basic method: fruit on the bottom, simple topping on top, steady heat, and a little patience.

About Our Recipes

We cook many of our recipes outdoors on our patio, where we have a lineup of grills that includes Green Mountain, Sawtooth, Louisiana, Memphis, Royall, Traeger, Char-Griller, Saber, Charmglow, Char-Broil, The Big Easy, Pacific Living Pizza Oven, Lodge Sportsman’s, Brinkman, and Weber. We call it our “Wall of Grill.” Our cooking style is built around outdoor flavor, simple preparation, and recipes that can work for pellet grill fans, gas grill cooks, wood fire cooks, and charcoal purists.

Most of our BBQ and grill recipes can be adapted to almost any good cooker. The most important things to watch are time and temperature. Some recipes can even be made in an oven or crock pot when needed, although cooking outdoors adds a flavor that is hard to replace. Sometimes the weather does not cooperate, but when it does, the patio is where we like to be.

Remember that a recipe is simply an outline. It is not written in stone. Use it as a starting point, then make it your own. Adjust the berries, try a different pellet flavor, or change the serving style to suit your taste. Good outdoor cooking should be enjoyable, flexible, and full of flavor.

Live your passion and do what you love.
