30 Days of Yoga in Bali: My Personal Journey and Results

After three months on the road, staying active isn’t optional for me — it’s essential. Some days I’m energized and ready to go; other days I have to remind myself that movement matters. Either way, exercise remains a priority.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I eat my way through every city I visit.

Travel constantly delivers new experiences, which I love. That variety also shows up in my workouts: one day I might be jogging along Balmoral Beach in Sydney, the next I’m hiking Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai.

I’ve never committed to a single type of exercise — variety keeps it interesting. My approach is simple: stay active, raise your heart rate, and lift heavy things every now and then.

But this week I arrived in a massive yoga capital – Ubud, Bali

Yogis are everywhere here — in cafes, shops, and on the streets. Yoga culture is woven into daily life more tightly than the tropical rains and more enthusiastically than the raw vegan treats on every menu.

And yes, those bliss balls are addictive.

That made me wonder: could I, someone who likes mixing up workouts, commit to 30 days of yoga? Could I stretch myself — literally and figuratively — in new ways?

Honestly, I wasn’t sure.

The reality is my posture has suffered (too much laptop time) and my flexibility could use improvement. My villa is within walking distance of the Yoga Barn, where people from around the world study and train. Convenience certainly helps.

Plus, a local yogi told me that regular practice will “break open my heart and set me free.”

Who wouldn’t want that? So I signed up.

My 30-day yoga challenge

I wanted a realistic plan, not an all-or-nothing promise. I won’t aim for every single day — I’m still exploring, working, tasting food, and snorkeling. I need rest days, and my muscles will, too.

My commitment is a minimum of four yoga sessions per week. I almost settled for three, but since this is a challenge I pushed myself to four.

Why it’s important to push ourselves

I’ve been thinking about why personal challenges matter. The short answer: we’re capable of far more than we usually give ourselves credit for. Once we step outside our habitual routines, new possibilities open up — life expands.

My past year has been a testament to that idea. Feeling a little like the first day of school, I laid out my yoga clothes the night before: clean, bright, and ready. Dressing the part helps set the mindset.

Tomorrow is my first class at 7 a.m. with seasoned yogis in Bali — I’m excited and a little nervous. Wish me luck!
